Many studies have shown that people consider moving homes to be one of the more stressful life events that they’ve had to overcome. So, why is moving so stressful for many homeowners? The most obvious reason is the time and effort required to move all of your things. If you’re hiring a moving company, you need to make sure that your things are safe and secure. Additionally, unless you want the stress of handling the cleaning yourself, you will have to organise bond cleaning or end-of-lease cleaning services.
For many people, moving houses comes with a lot of changes to day-to-day life. You have to get used to new neighbours, new commuting routes, new grocery stores and so on. As a result, the process can be physically and mentally draining. To mitigate your stress levels, it’s a good idea to find ways to make the move easier.
To help you with your relocating woes, here are five tips to make moving homes easier.
- Plan ahead
The punch you don’t see coming is the one that hurts the most. If you adequately prepare for the storm of problems that comes with moving, you’ll save yourself from a lot of headaches.
As a rule of thumb, you should give yourself a month and half to prepare for a move. It’s a good idea to start with things that involve complicated logistics. This could be booking a moving company or organising the shipping details for your cars. If you’re going to be hiring bond cleaners, do it as early as possible. Doing so will give you enough time to sort out any issues should they come up.
A month before, you should start packing items that you don’t use on a daily basis. This could be certain clothing, cooking appliances and so on.
It’s also important to notify the relevant people and organisations that you’re moving. This includes Centrelink, the Taxation Office and your bank.
Part of the reason why moving is so stressful is the sheer amount of stuff that you have to pack and move. That’s why, as you’re packing, you should take the time to get rid of items that have no use to you anymore. You can bin things, sell them or give them away.
Sometimes it can be difficult to decide whether or not you should get rid of something. If you’re not sure if you should get rid of an item, think about how much you’ve used it recently. Of course, some items are used seasonally. However, if you haven’t touched your fancy in-home exercise equipment in more than a year, you’re probably not going to use it anytime soon. When it comes to such items, it is often a good idea to sell them or give them away.
- Use proper containers
When moving, it’s a good idea to invest in proper moving containers. Nothing is worse than packing a whole lot of stuff only for it to fall through the bottom. To avoid this problem make sure to use cardboard boxes that are specifically designed for moving. Such boxes should be able to handle a considerable amount of weight.
Another thing to consider is how you’re going to carry the boxes. Does it have handles cut out of it? Do you have the appropriate dolly to carry them? Make sure you plan these things out before the big move.
If you need to, you can also use plastic containers. Be warned though, some plastic containers have fragile bottoms that can break when you put too much weight on them.
- Pack by weight and size
When packing, it’s tempting to just start throwing things into random boxes and hope that it all fits. However, to make things easier for you, it’s a good idea to organise your packing by weight and size.
This does two things. First, it ensures that your boxes aren’t top heavy. Putting the heavier items on top can damage more fragile items at the bottom. Even if you pack things tightly, things can easily become undone during transit. Secondly, it makes unpacking much easier. Since your boxes are organised, you can easily set aside all the smaller items on top. This reduces the chances of you losing or breaking something as you’re unpacking.
Another thing to consider are appliances and large furniture. You might find that some of them won’t fit in your new home. Make sure that you know the measurements of the doors and the hallways of your new home ahead of time. Additionally, it’s good to know the dimensions of items like the refrigerator, your fixed bed frame or TV.
- Know where you valuables are
During the move, your stuff can easily get lost or broken. As a result, it’s good to put all of your valuable documents, jewelry and mementos in one bag. Ideally, you’ll be carrying this bag wherever you go. This will prevent your precious items from being misplaced or stolen.
No one likes moving homes. However, it’s a necessary inconvenience that we all have to face. To keep yourself from tearing your hair out, consider some of the tips that we’ve discussed above. It might also help to remember that moving homes is generally a good thing. It’s usually a sign of bigger and better things – new friends, new location and new experiences. Might as well enjoy it.
